LECTURE: Wiltshire at War - Recording Wiltshire's wartime landscape from aerial photographs, field investigations and documentary sources
7:30 pm, Thursday, 25 February, 2010
An illustrated lecture with case studies and examples from the Devizes area.
Although the impact of the Second World War on the British landscape was widespread it was in places short-lived. Many of the wartime features were soon removed and very little now remains of the numerous airfields, camps and defences built at the time. Evidence from a range of sources, including field investigation, documentary and oral research and analysing wartime aerial photographs is essential for recording these sites and to reveal a clearer picture of Wiltshire’s changing wartime landscapes.
This talk will provide an overview of the different techniques used to record these types of sites and specific case studies and examples of the Devizes area will be used.
Daniel Miles works in Heritage Data Management at the National Monuments Record (NMR) in Swindon. He has previously worked in museums and as a field archaeologist. Edward Carpenter is an Investigator working for English Heritage in the Aerial Survey section.
Join us after the talk for an opportunity to share your interest in Devizes during WW2 over a cup of tea or a glass of wine. Bring along any photographs that you may have or any objects that have a story to tell.
