OUTING to Marshfield
11:00 am, Friday, 18 June, 2010
An outing to Marshfield, which lies on the southern edge of the Cotswolds just over the county boundary in Gloucestershire.
About 5 miles NW of Box the interesting and picturesque village of Marshfield has a long history, having gained market status in 1234. The layout is that of a typical medieval market town with long narrow burgage plot gardens extending back from the narrow frontages. Although most buildings in the village are in the Georgian style and date from the 18th century there are some much older including fine almshouses. The even older church was rebuilt in perpendicular style by the monks of Tewkesbury Abbey around 1470.
Meet at the church (map ref. ST 782737) at 11am, and after a talk on its history there will be a guided tour of the village by local resident and historian, Margaret Jones.
There are several historic inns in the village where lunch can be bought (no need to book), or you can eat a picnic lunch in the churchyard.
In the afternoon it is hoped to arrange a visit to Tormarton church (subject to access) a short drive north of Marshfield.
This is an 'own car' outing, so If you can offer a lift, or would like a lift (and are prepared to share the cost), please let the Bookings Secretary know.
Cost includes donations to local church(es).
