Roundway G8 Barrow

The collections of the Wiltshire Heritage Museum illustrate the history of archaeology in Wessex. It began with antiquaries like William Stukeley digging into barrows partly to obtain trophies for their collections, partly to find evidence for their arcane theories. William Cunnington I and Sir Richard Colt Hoare were pioneers who paved the way towards modern archaeology. They excavated primarily in barrows, recording and publishing all their discoveries. Later Victorian excavators copied their work, later often preferring to investigate settlements rather than burials.
