Corn Dolly

Now just a country craft, these intricately woven straw shapes originally had a much more important role. They were fashioned from the last sheaf of straw to be cut from the fields after the harvest and taken home, or sometimes even to the church. They were said to house the corn spirit, keeping it safe over the winter, and were then ploughed back into the soil to release it again in the spring.
