Has Calne Castle been found?

Archaeologists are puzzled by the latest evidence from the excavation on the possible site of Calne Castle.

The team have been excavating in areas highlighted by scientific analysis in Calne’s Castlefields Park. So far they have found evidence of medieval buildings, as well as pottery dating to the Roman and the Iron Age period, but they have still to be able to answer the big question – have they found the castle?

The team are working until Sunday, and hope to be able to find evidence to date an enigmatic circular building, possibly a tower, and to see if a large ditch on the site could be part of either the castle or an Iron Age defensive site. There will be a chance to find out what they have found as there will be an open weekend as part of the Festival of British Archaeology – the site (accessible from Castlefields Park) will be open on Saturday and Sunday 17 and 18 July, from 10am to 4pm.

The excavation is being carried out by the Archaeology Field Group of the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, with the help of Calne Town Council and Wiltshire Council.
