SUMMER SUNDAY TEAS AT THE MUSEUM
Tuesday, 27 July, 2010
On Sunday afternoons during August afternoon teas will be available at Wiltshire Heritage Museum, Devizes. Visitors will be able to purchase a cream tea or a slice of home-made cake, all made by Museum volunteers, sit down with a cup of tea and chat to other visitors – or just read the Sunday paper.
There is much for visitors to enjoy at the Museum, which is free on Sundays. It houses an outstanding collection tracing the fascinating history of people living in Wiltshire in a series of galleries, including Neolithic, Bronze Age, Roman and Medieval. Also displayed are important finds associated with both Avebury and Stonehenge, including finds from Bush Barrow, described as the ‘crown jewels of the King of Stonehenge’. More modern history is explored in the Recent History Gallery and in the Natural History Gallery visitors can explore the geology and wildlife of the county, including the county’s famous chalk downland. There are also activities in each gallery for children (of all ages) to enjoy.
During the afternoon visitors will also be able to enjoy the Museum’s current exhibition White Horses and Hill Figures which explores the chalk figures carved into the landscape of Wiltshire and beyond and contains many superb aerial photographs .
Director David Dawson said “we are often asked by visitors if we have a café so I am delighted that volunteers have offered to run this service for us and if successful we would anticipate doing this more regularly”.
The Museum is open noon to 4pm on Sundays and entry is free. Refreshments from £2.25
