Festive Finds Day
Thursday, 30 November, 2006
The Finds Liaison Officer for Wiltshire, Katie Hinds, will be holding a finds identification session at Wiltshire Heritage Museum on Monday 18 December between 10 am and 3 pm. Entry is free.
Every year discoveries of flint, pottery, metal objects and coins found by people digging in their gardens, walking their dogs or using a metal detector, contribute a huge amount to our knowledge of the history and archaeology of Wiltshire. Anyone who has found anything is invited to come along to the Festive Finds Days where Katie will identify your discoveries and make a record of them for posterity.
Finds Liaison Officers are managed by the Portable Antiquities Scheme (who are funded by the MLA), which is a voluntary scheme for the recording of archaeological objects found by members of the public. Every year many thousands of objects are discovered across the country and these discoveries offer an important source for understanding the past.
Katie Hinds said that “Finds Liaison Officers are employed by each county in England and Wales to record reported finds and give advice on finds recording, conservation and the Treasure Act. We also encourage liaison between members of the public, metal detector users, archaeologists and museums. I hope people will come along to the Festive Finds Day to find out more about their finds, have them recorded for posterity - and maybe enjoy a mince pie or two!”
