Viking Family Day at Museum - 21 February
Wednesday, 10 February, 2010
The Museum is holding a Viking Family Day on Sunday 21 February from 11am to 4pm. The Temesvikings re-enactment group will be setting up a tent and giving short talks on Viking life.
The Temesvikings tent will furnished with furs and other Viking objects and the re-enactors will give short talks on Viking food, clothing and weapons and visitors will also be able to listen to Norse stories, take part in games, handle objects and try on clothes.
Visitors of all ages can take part in hands-on activities and make a Viking shield, mini long boat or wrist bank – all of which can be taken home. Other activities include Viking style tattoos and a runic alphabet gallery quiz. There will be a prize draw from the completed quizzes.
This is a drop in event and families can stay for as long or little as they like. The entrance fee will be £2 for adults, free for children and free drinks will be available throughout the day. Visitors can also see the Museum’s current exhibition “On the Home Front: Wiltshire in World War II”.
Ali Rushent the Museum’s Education Officer said “we anticipate this day will be popular as the Vikings and the stories surrounding them is a topic that captures the imagination of children (and parents). Also, with ‘Viking Invaders and Settlers’ being a Key Stage 2 National Curriculum topic, this day can be a valuable resource for children studying it at school. Family days are very important for the Museum as they give families the chance to take part in hands on activities together and promote the ‘Kids in Museums’ Manifesto which helps to make the Museum a fun, friendly and accessible place for children to visit.”
Entry to the museum event will be £2 per adult and free for children. All activities are included.
The day will run from 11am - 4pm and no booking is necessary.
